International concern about nuclear weapons programs of Iran and North Korea is expected to be high on the agenda of next week's summit of G-8 leaders in St. Petersburg. Experts say the leaders of the world's seven richest countries and Russia, the so called G-8 group, are also likely to discuss energy security and global cooperation in fighting health threats.
Next week's G-8 summit in St. Petersburg brings together leaders of the United States, Britain, Canada,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], France,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Germany,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Italy, Japan and Russia.
In a joint appearance with visiting Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper in Washington, President Bush indicated nuclear non-proliferation is high on his agenda for the meeting.
"I talked to President Putin this morning, about not only making sure that we not only send messages to the North Koreans, but that our strategy will work with Iranm," said President Bush.
Kenneth Pollack, from the independent public policy group, the Brookings Institution, says the Iranians may feel pressured to respond to an international deal on their nuclear program prior to the summit.
"My guess is what you'll see is them do is give part of that answer,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and the part they'll probably try to give is the positive part," said Kenneth Pollack. "They will say, we're willing to accept it in principle,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but we can't give you a full answer just yet. We need a little bit more time, hoping that that will be enough to buy off the Russians, Chinese and Europeans, and then they will deliver the bad half of their answer after the G-8 summit is over."
The five permanent U.N. Security Council member countries and Germany have formally offered a proposal to Iran that it end uranium enrichment in return for various incentives,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or face punitive action.
Discussing the issue at the G-8 meeting may be immaterial, according to another Brookings scholar, Johannes Linn. He said he feels the G-8 is not an effective forum for leaders to make real global decisions,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], because some of the key players are missing.
"If you add the current big issues, Iran and North Korea, in terms of non-proliferation, again,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], how far can you go in resolving,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], addressing, the issue without China at the table," asked Johannes Linn.
But Brookings' Carlos Pascual says the success of the G-8 summit should not be measured by the number of agreements reached. Rather, he says, the important thing about meetings at this level is that everyone is talking.
"What it points to, I think, is something that is important for these G-8 meetings, to think of them as successful,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], not if they come up with particular results or outcomes on issues like energy security, because, frankly, I don't think they can come up with a successful outcome on energy security, and it's better not to paper over the differences," said Carlos Pascual.
Other items on the agenda include global cooperation to combat the spread of diseases,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], such as bird flu or HIV/AIDS.
For the first time ever, Russia hosts this year's summit,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which takes place from July 15 to 17, in St. Petersburg.

Koreans look considerably different to decades ago. These days the average Korean is taller,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], heavier and has a smaller face.
Figures show that over the past three decades the average person's height has grown 2 - 5 cm and their weight has increased by 7 - 12 kg,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Most notably,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], faces are now an average of 1 cm shorter. The difference is demonstrated by the Miss Korea Beauty Pageant. In the first contest,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], held in 1957,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], contestants were typically short with ample figures. But from 1960s - 1990s,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Korean physiques grew distinctly leaner with longer arms and legs.
The average height of beauty contestants in the 70s was 166 cm -- but it is now around 171 cm,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Choi Eun-hee, an actress from the 50s,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], was thought to have the perfect face: round with distinct features. This is a far cry from the small faces and big eyes we see today.
Differences also apply to male stars,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], with today's heartthrobs having softer,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], more feminine contours.
Meanwhile the battle of the bulge has emerged as an all-too-common social problem. While a barrel chest and potbelly were once associated with affluence,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], having a big waistline today is not considered attractive.
Obesity is becoming public enemy no. 1. It has led to a booming physical fitness industry,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], now worth nearly US$2 billion a year and still growing, as people try to slim down.

At the rate the Korean economy is going,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], GDP will stagnate by 2010,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the result of an excessive focus on distribution by former and present governments economic policies since the mid 1980s,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], former head of the Korea Economic Research Institute (KERI) Jwa Seung-hee said Monday. Jwa made the remarks at a lecture hosted by the Yeoido Institute of the main opposition Grand National Party.
Turning to the governments relocation of the administrative capital,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Jwa said tearing down Seoul,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which is developing well,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], was hardly going to bring balanced development of the country. Ethnic Koreans who have stayed in Korea illegally are likely to benefit from a new immigration policy that will offer them residency and employment rights a year after they leave Korea voluntarily,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. The Justice Ministry says illegal ethnic Koreans must report to immigration authorities by the end of August to benefit from the new regulation,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Ministry officials say the policy will also benefit those staying here on forged passports. The measure is aimed at curbing the number of illegal ethnic Koreans entering the country mostly from China and the former Soviet Union. The government believes about 60 percent of an estimated 50,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000 illegal ethnic Koreans will take advantage of the amnesty.

China and Japan were unruffled Thursday by a revelation that has shaken Koreas national confidence to the core -- the discovery of parasite eggs in some domestic brands of the ultimate Korean side-dish kimchi,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
In case of China,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the state-controlled Chinanews.com current affairs site summed up Korean media coverage in a three-line brief,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], reporting that the Korea Food and Drug Administration (KFDA) admitted the find after earlier detecting parasites in Chinese kimchi brands.
However, that was partly because in China the damage was already done. That culminated in a ban of some Korean kimchi products,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], pepper paste and seasonings despite the fact that China does not officially import them. As a result,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Chinese grocery stores had already stopped selling Korean-made kimchi and seasonings so Thursdays announcement had little effect.
China's food safety watchdog had urged the KFDA to hold off announcing the parasite find in Chinese brands. When Korea demurred,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Beijing retaliated with media stories about parasites in Korean brands and threats of tough inspections of Korean cosmetics.
Japan,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], where kimchi does not make headline news in and of itself,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], has been an amused onlooker.
The countrys leading newspapers reported the scandal as a trade conflict between Korea and China in their Wednesday issues. The Nihon Keizai Shimbuns article was titled,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Conflicts between China and Korea Over Kimchi, and China and Korea Pitted Against Each Other Over Kimchi, as Parasite Eggs Found,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], was the title of the Mainichi Shimbun story. The Yomiuri Shimbun headlined,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], China and Korea at Kimchi War; Parasite Eggs Found in Chinese Kimchi.
By Thursday the story was dead,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], despite the fact that kimchi products of both Korean and Japanese provenance sell briskly in the country. Perhaps now the Korean government has admitted that parasite eggs have been found in kimchi from the country that invented the otherwise healthful delicacy, it will merit another headline.

President George W. Bush and wife Laura arrive at Seoul military airport, 05 Aug 2008 U.S. President George Bush has arrived in Seoul, South Korea,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the first stop on a week-long Asian tour that will also take him to Thailand and China for the opening of the Beijing Olympics. VOA's Paula Wolfson reports from the South Korean capital, where thousands of South Koreans opposed to the resumption of U.S. beef imports protested.
This is likely to be Mr. Bush's last trip to Asia as president. And he has a full agenda for his talks with South Korean, Thai and Chinese leaders - from North Korea's nuclear ambitions, to trade, to human rights.
In Seoul,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he will discuss security and finance matters with President Lee Myung-bak. But North Korea is likely to be the issue that hangs over all else.
President Bush has said he welcomes North Korea's recent declaration of its plutonium enrichment activities,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and the destruction of the cooling tower at its Yongbyon reactor. But he says the North must still agree to a verification process.
"They're a highly sanctioned regime," said the U.S. president. "And, as I said, they've got a lot of obligations that they must fulfill in order for these sanctions to leave."
Protests over US beef imports delayed president's visit to Seoul
Mr. Bush was originally expected to visit South Korea last month. But the trip was postponed following massive demonstrations in Seoul against imports of American beef,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Overall, passions have cooled in recent weeks. But as the president arrived in the South Korean capital,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], roughly 20,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000 protesters gathered in the city. There were about a dozen arrests and there have been reports police used water cannons to keep demonstrators from blocking a major city street.
All the same, there has been no word of any major clashes between demonstrators and some of the more than 16,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000 law enforcement officers put on stand-by to handle any unruly crowds.
Trip to Thailand will include border visit for Mrs. Bush
Mr. Bush's reception in Thailand is likely to be much more sedate. Officially,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he is going to Bangkok to mark the 175th anniversary of U.S.-Thai relations,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and to deliver a speech that will be,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in essence, an assessment of his Asia policies.
But going to Thailand also provides an opportunity to highlight conditions in neighboring Burma. It will also give First Lady Laura Bush, who has made Burma a personal cause, a chance to tour a refugee camp on the Thai-Burmese border and meet face to face with some of the victims of Burma's military regime.
"The more I've seen, the more critical I see the need is for the people in Burma to be for the world to pay attention to the people of Burma, and for the world to put pressure on the military regime," she said.
From Thailand, the president and Mrs. Bush will go to Beijing,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], where he will be playing two roles: leader of the United States and sports fan.
Bush looking forward to Beijing Olympics,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], despite criticism over human rights
He says he will raise concerns about human rights and other issues with Chinese leaders in private, but will not use the Olympics to make a political statement.
"I am looking forward to cheering the athletes," said President Bush. "I think it will be - I think it would be good for these athletes who have worked so hard to see their president waving the flag."
During an interview with The Washington Post newspaper, conducted during the flight from Washington to Seoul, the president talked about the evolution of U.S.-China relations during his years in office.
He praised China's efforts to curb the nuclear ambitions of both North Korea and Iran. But he acknowledged it is very difficult to determine if there has been any improvement in human rights in China over the last eight years. And he expressed disappointment that Chinese actions helped scuttle the latest round of world trade talks.

A major point of interest in the nuclear declaration that Pyongyang handed over Thursday has been the amount of plutonium North Korea possesses,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].

The source says more plutonium remaining at the nuclear facility could increase the total amount to 44 kg,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. A nuclear weapon requires four to eight kg of plutonium,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].

From right, Van Nistelrooy,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Ronaldo,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Park,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Rooney The fate of Manchester United and coach Alex Ferguson hangs on next Monday's English Premier League match with Chelsea, broadcast in Korea at 1 a.m.
ManU faces a grave challenge after losses on Oct. 29 against Middlesborough (1:4) and again against Lille (0:1) dealt a huge blow to players self-esteem,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Outspoken captain Roy Keanes public insults of his own teammates made the situation worse.
Coach Ferguson may now be facing the most critical moment in his 19-year coaching career,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. The situation is so bad that an opinion poll the Guardian dailys website shows that 47 percent believe coach Ferguson is for the chop at the end of the season,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Press attacks are also mounting. The Daily Express said Ferguson had no idea how to draw ManU out of the crisis, while the Manchester Evening News also raised doubts about Fergusons ability to control Keanes stinging tongue. It said this was the kind of thing that always happens when an empire is collapsing: the emperor is betrayed by once-loyal men, and once-solid structures begin to erode.
The match with Chelsea will be the crossroads. If Manchester beats Chelsea,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], currently the top of the Premier League and undefeated in 11 games (10 wins and one draw), all the distrust and defeatism in and outside the team will evaporate in an instant. But if they lose, the dream of recapturing the top will burst like a bubble and Ferguson will have to take the fall.
Korean striker Park Ji-sung (24),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who is in his first season with ManU, may feel the pressure,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but crisis just means opportunity. If he emerges as a savior to his sinking team, he has a rosy future. Park was upbeat this week,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], saying,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Im looking forward to the match with Chelsea. I always feel excited about fighting strong teams. Ill do my best to bring the team out of this slump.
The day will coincidentally be the 19th anniversary of Ferguson's tenure as coach,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
